RO Booster Pump Not Working?

RO Booster Pump Not Working? Causes, Checks and Fixes (RO Pump Kharab)

The booster pump pushes water through the RO membrane at the pressure it needs. When it stops, the whole purifier stops. But a silent pump is not always a dead pump – very often the fault is in the power supply, a switch or the water inlet. Go through these checks first.

Symptoms and likely causes

What you noticeMost likely cause
Pump completely silent, no lightNo power – socket, SMPS/adaptor or loose connector
Pump silent, power light onTank full (float/pressure switch), low-pressure switch, or wiring
Pump hums but no waterInlet closed, choked pre-filter, stuck solenoid valve or worn pump head
Pump runs non-stopFloat or high-pressure switch fault, leak, or tank not filling
Loud noise or vibrationLoose mounting, air in the line or worn motor/diaphragm
Pump starts and stops again and againLow inlet pressure, faulty pressure switch or leak

7 checks before replacing the pump

  1. Power and SMPS. Most domestic pumps run on 24V DC from an SMPS adaptor. If the adaptor is dead or weak, the pump will not start or will run slowly. A multimeter should read close to the rated voltage at the pump connector. See our SMPS and adaptors.
  2. Tank full / float switch. If the storage tank is full, the float or high-pressure switch correctly stops the pump. Draw some water and see if it restarts.
  3. Inlet water. Make sure the inlet valve is open and water is actually reaching the purifier. Many pumps have a low-pressure switch that stops the pump when there is no incoming water.
  4. Choked pre-filters. A blocked sediment or carbon filter starves the pump. Change them if they are old.
  5. Solenoid valve. If the SV is stuck closed, the pump hums but no water flows. See solenoid valves.
  6. Loose wires and connectors. Check the pump plug and wire joints for corrosion or looseness.
  7. Pump head. If power is fine and water reaches it, but the pump gives no pressure, the diaphragm or pump head is worn – time for a new pump.

When to replace the pump

Replace the pump if it is silent even with a good SMPS and full inlet water, if it only hums with no pressure after the filters and SV are checked, or if it is very noisy and leaking from the head. Choose the same GPD rating as your membrane – typically 75 or 100 GPD for domestic purifiers and 300 GPD for small commercial units – and the same voltage.

Safety note

Always unplug the purifier before touching wires or opening the pump area. If you are not comfortable with electrical checks, send us a short video of the problem on WhatsApp and we will guide you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an RO booster pump last?

Usually several years. Running the pump without water, or with choked filters, shortens its life.

Can a bad adaptor damage the pump?

A weak or faulty SMPS can make the pump run poorly or stop. Replace a faulty adaptor with one of the same voltage and enough current rating.

Why does my RO pump make noise?

Common reasons are loose mounting screws, air in the lines after a filter change, or a worn pump head.
