Normal domestic membranes are designed for moderate TDS. In many parts of north and west India, borewell water reads 1500, 2000 or even 3000 ppm. A standard membrane in such water gives high output TDS and dies early. Here is how to choose the right one.
Why normal membranes struggle with high TDS
- Higher TDS means more osmotic pressure – the pump must push harder for the same output.
- Output TDS rises in proportion – 95% rejection of 2500 ppm still leaves about 125 ppm.
- Scaling (hardness deposits) builds up faster on the membrane surface.

Match the rest of the system
- Pump – a strong 100 GPD pump (or 300 GPD for commercial) is needed to reach good output. See RO booster pump prices.
- Flow restrictor – do not reduce drain flow to save water; high-TDS water needs proper flushing. See flow restrictor guide.
- Pre-filters – change sediment and carbon filters more often (every 3–4 months) with borewell water.
- Antiscalant / softener – for very hard water, an extra pre-treatment stage extends membrane life.
What output TDS to expect
With 2000 ppm input, a healthy high-TDS membrane typically gives somewhere around 80–150 ppm. Use the 10% rule from how to use a TDS meter to monitor it, and expect to replace it sooner than in low-TDS areas – often every 12–18 months.
