RO Making Noise?

RO Making Noise? Humming, Buzzing or Rattling – Causes and Fixes (RO Awaaz Kar Raha Hai)

A soft hum while the RO is filling is normal – that is the booster pump. But loud vibration, buzzing when the RO is off, or a pump that never stops are signs of a problem. Here is how to tell what is wrong.

Normal vs abnormal RO sounds

SoundNormal?Likely cause
Soft steady hum while fillingYesBooster pump working normally
Loud rattling or vibrationNoPump mounting loose, pump touching the cabinet
Hum that never stops, tank fullNoPressure switch / float problem – RO not shutting off
Pump runs, makes louder noise, little waterNoLow inlet water, choked pre-filter or air in the line
Buzzing or clicking when RO is offNoSolenoid valve coil or SMPS fault
High-pitched whine from adaptorNoSMPS/adaptor failing

Fixes to try

  1. Tighten the pump mounting screws and check rubber feet. Make sure the pump is not touching the cabinet wall.
  2. Check the inlet – is the inlet valve fully open and is there water pressure? A pump running dry gets loud.
  3. Change a choked sediment filter – it starves the pump. See sediment filter guide.
  4. Bleed air – after a filter change, air in the line makes the pump noisy for a few minutes. Let it run.
  5. If the pump never stops, check the float/HP switch – read RO tank overflow fix.
  6. Buzzing when off – test the solenoid valve (SV guide) and the SMPS adaptor.

When to replace the booster pump

If the pump is loud even with good inlet pressure, clean filters and tight mounting – and water output has dropped – the pump head or motor is wearing out. Compare prices in our RO booster pump price list and read booster pump not working.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for an RO to make noise?

A low hum during filling is normal. Loud rattling or noise when the tank is full is not.

Why does my RO make noise at night?

At night, inlet pressure often changes and the RO may start and stop more often. Check the pressure switches and float.

Can a noisy pump damage the RO?

A pump running dry or non-stop can overheat and damage itself and the SMPS. Fix it soon.
