Borewell Water Purifier Guide

Borewell Water Purifier Guide: Treating High TDS, Hardness and Iron at Home (Borewell Ka Paani Kaise Saaf Kare)

Borewell water is the main source for many homes, but it is very different from municipal water. It often has high TDS, hardness and sometimes iron, and it is not chlorinated. A purifier that works fine on city water can fail fast on borewell water. Here is how to set it up correctly.

Step 1: Test your borewell water

  • TDS – with a TDS meter. Borewell water is often 500–2000+ ppm.
  • pH – with test drops; see pH of drinking water.
  • Hardness and iron – white scale on buckets means hardness; yellow-brown stains or metallic taste mean iron. A lab test gives exact values.

Our Water Testing Kit (₹399) covers TDS and pH at home.

Step 2: Choose the right purifier

Borewell TDSRecommended setup
Below 500 ppmRO + UV with TDS controller, or UV + UF if water is not hard or salty
500 – 1500 ppmRO + UV + UF with good pre-filters
1500 – 3000 ppmRO with a high-TDS membrane and strong pump; consider an extra pre-filter
Above 3000 ppmGet water tested; a commercial-grade or specially designed system may be needed

Steel-tank models like Blue Mount R Steel Guard BD54 (₹14,500) suit families who want a premium build. See all domestic RO purifiers.

Step 3: Add pre-filtration

  • An extra 10 inch or 20 inch pre-filter housing with a sediment cartridge before the RO catches sand and rust.
  • For high hardness, a softener or antiscalant stage protects the membrane.
  • For iron, a dedicated iron-removal filter before the RO helps – iron fouls membranes quickly.

Step 4: Maintain more often

  • Sediment filter every 2–3 months.
  • Carbon filter every 6 months.
  • Membrane often every 12–18 months with high TDS.
  • Clean the tank every 6 months – see how to clean an RO tank.

Service kits make this easy – see the RO service kit guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is RO necessary for borewell water?

In most cases yes, because borewell water often has high TDS and hardness. Test first.

Why does my RO fail quickly on borewell water?

High TDS, hardness and iron foul the membrane. Use proper pre-filters and change them often.

Can I use reject water from borewell RO?

Yes, for cleaning and flushing – see reuse RO waste water.
