Changing the RO membrane is easier than most people think. With the right replacement and 15 minutes, you can do it yourself and save the technician visit charge. Here is the safe way to do it.
Before you start: what you need
- A new membrane of the same size and GPD as the old one (most homes use 1812 size, 75/80/100 GPD). See RO membrane price list.
- A towel and a small bucket.
- A housing wrench if the cap is tight.
- A TDS meter to check the result.
Step-by-step: changing the RO membrane
- Switch off power and close the inlet valve. Open the tap to release pressure.
- Disconnect the pipe from the membrane housing cap (press the collet and pull the pipe).
- Unscrew the housing cap – hold the housing body firmly and turn the cap anticlockwise.
- Pull out the old membrane with pliers by its centre tube. Note which end went in first.
- Insert the new membrane – the end with the two black rubber O-rings goes in first, pushed firmly to the bottom. The brine seal (single rubber lip) stays near the cap.
- Check the cap O-ring, refit the cap and tighten by hand, then a quarter turn more.
- Reconnect the pipe, open the inlet and switch on.
Flush the new membrane
New membranes contain a preservative. Let the RO fill the tank and drain the first 1–2 tank-fills (or run to drain for 15–20 minutes) before drinking. Then test TDS – the output should be under 10% of your tap water TDS.
Common mistakes
- Inserting the membrane upside down – water bypasses it and TDS stays high.
- Not pushing it fully – same problem.
- Using a higher GPD membrane without matching the flow restrictor and pump.
- Leaving a twisted or damaged O-ring in the cap – causes leakage.
Change pre-filters at the same time
A new membrane behind old pre-filters will choke early. The Standard RO Service Kit (₹890) has 3 filters plus an RO membrane together.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which membrane fits my RO?
Check the size (usually 1812) and GPD printed on the old membrane, or send us a photo on WhatsApp.
Why is TDS still high after changing the membrane?
Check that it is inserted the right way, the cap O-ring is fine, and the TDS controller is not open too much.
How often should the membrane be changed?
Usually every 1.5–3 years. Read when to replace an RO membrane.
